UKDP has a proven track record in assisting Local Authorities to resolve drainage issues affecting the properties in their area. So far, we have resolved issues referred to us by over 70 Local Authorities, affecting more than 3,000 properties – and saving £6m in council default repair budget. Our unique expertise lies in insurer liaison and property owner co-ordination, to swiftly investigate and repair drainage issues saving both time and money for environmental health officers and property owners alike.
The transfer of private drains and sewers in October 2011 represented the biggest change in responsibility for sewerage services since 1937. It meant that shared sewers connecting to a main sewer (both foul and surface water) transferred to the ownership of the ten Water and Sewerage Companies (WaSCs) across England and Wales. However, there are still a number of drainage issues which have not transferred to WaSC ownership, and in which Local Authorities may be asked to become involved:
UKDP can assist Local Authorities and property owners in their local area with any drainage issues, including those outlined above.
Our service is free to the Local Authorities referring cases to us, and we can offer advice and guidance, insurer liaison and negotiation and handling of all cases (including complex cases involving multiple properties or landowners) from start to finish.
Unsure if we can assist with a case you are handling? Simply call us for advice on

Councils across England and Wales gave us their views and opinions on the transfer of private drains and sewers before the new legislation took effect.
